Phakic Intraocular Lenses
An intraocular lens put surgically into the eye to treat myopia is known as a phakic intraocular lens (PIOL) (nearsightedness). Because the normal lens of the eye is not altered, it is referred described as "phakic" (Latin for "having a lens"). Pseudophakic intraocular lenses are those that are inserted into eyes after the native lens of the eye has been removed during cataract surgery.
