Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder where the stomach contents flow back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms. This backward flow, or reflux, damages the lining of the esophagus and can lead to complications if left untreated. Common causes include obesity, hiatal hernia, pregnancy, smoking, and certain foods. Treatment options include lifestyle modifications such as weight loss, diet changes, and quitting smoking, as well as medications like proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers.
