In fact, the main reason people are afraid of surgery is the possible complications, however they are extremely rare. Our entire team prides itself on excellent service and aftercare which is tailored to the patient. I'm sorry that you felt your expectations were not met. Our team’s goal is to optimise the service we provide with every one of our patients. Regarding your poor hospital stay, occasionally patients I see for follow-up comment on an experience during their hospital stay which could be improved. I always provide particular confidential feedback to the Nurse Unit Manager on the post-operative ward, and the staff on the ward are attentive and are always keen to improve conditions. Regarding how you feel, because of privacy regulations I can’t discuss here the specifics about your result however I take your feedback seriously, and I would like this opportunity to look into this further if you would like. Hi Ann. It has been some time now hasn’t it! You are a truly remarkable person, and I will never forget the challenges you had when we first met, and what we went through to try to get things right for you. I’m so glad that we finally got there and I hope things are still going well. You are absolutely right in saying that patients know their own bodies. That is something I believe surgeons & doctors these days could well do a much better job at understanding. Patients always tend to know when something is not right, and it is our job to provide them with the dignity of taking that concern seriously. Not giving up on patients, & doing things that are difficult that many others may not be willing to do, because there is always some belief we can help despite how difficult a procedure may be. This is a trait I try to instil in all of my junior trainees. Revisional surgery, after previous operations, does seem to be something I have come to do a lot of since I started 15 years ago as I have seen many patients having some kind of issue from previous surgeries. I understand the difficulties some people have and a lot of my training when I started surgery tailored to these issues. I do like to offer these “re-do” procedures in a timely manner when I believe they will be truly helpful. Symptoms such as yours can be extremely debilitating and most times a revisional procedure can prevent years of hardship. Myself & my team respect the dignity of our patients and we like to maintain a patient-focused clinic, we allocate lengthy consult times to ensure a good discussion and plenty of question time, whilst ensuring we never keep our patients waiting. I understand many patients may be anxious about surgery and fear the possible problems, however after going through with it they soon realise how very safe it is, especially when surrounded by a professional and attentive team who are dedicated to this particular field of surgery and its aftercare. With this sort of surgery, many patients decide not to return for follow-up reviews and it can be difficult to track them down and convince to come back in.
