Dr Michael Harris
Special interests: Depression and anxiety (primary and treatment resistant) Perinatal mental health (problems that develop during and following pregnancy) Dialectical behavioural therapy informed treatment for personality disorders and developmental trauma. Psychodynamic formulation (understanding how past experiences have shaped one’s perceptions and responses to what happens in the present. Integrative approaches to recovery (utilising evidence-based approaches rooted in as many different modalities as possible). I completed my core psychiatry training in London through the University College London training scheme and after obtaining membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2012, I moved to Brighton to continue higher training. I currently work as a perinatal psychiatrist for Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, treating pregnant and post-natal mothers in North West Sussex. I am excited to practice as a psychiatrist at a time when mental health is at last receiving the recognition it deserves. Research is beginning to uncover so much of what was previously uncharted territory. The prospect for a full or substantial recovery from mental illness is growing each year. I am particularly interested in neuromodulation, a treatment modality offering a third dimension to the traditional model of medication with psychological therapy. I am certified to prescribe and administer transcranial magnetic stimulation which is now a well-established and reliable treatment for depression and anxiety. I am a strong believer in patient-orientated care and my aim is to always put my patients’ interests first. I am humbled by the trust my patients place in me and inspired by the battles they face with courage and endless hope.
