Beliefs and values rooted in social justice, equality, respect and empathy fuel motivation, and a desire to empower people to bring about positive change in their lives. People drawn to this area of work, often forget to afford themselves the same time, care or consideration in their own lives. Keel Coaching for Community and Voluntary Sector recognises that people who engage in support work, often place the needs of others ahead of their own, sometimes without realising it. In so doing they deplete their reserves and often life becomes out of balance. Increased workloads, limited resources, and the intensity of the work often leaves people with a sense of frustration, feeling overwhelmed or simply exhausted. Signs of this depletion arise physically in the body including lack of energy, trouble sleeping, susceptibility to colds/flu and other common illnesses. It can also manifest itself in personal/emotional ways including relationship difficulties, compassion fatigue, inability to deal with the daily stresses of life and an inability to switch off from work.
